A Rights and Things Return is a return that may be filed for a deceased person in addition to the regular date of death return. It would include items that were unpaid at the time of the death, such as interest on un-matured deposits, unpaid salary and unpaid dividends.

You can call us at 1-800-959-8281, or complete the form on the back of this information sheet and send it to your tax services office or tax centre. tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit.

You have to file a T3 Trust Income Tax and Information Return (T3 return) to report the income the estate earned after the date of death.

If you elect to file a rights or things optional return, you must report all rights and things on that return except for rights and things transferred to beneficiaries. You cannot split rights or things between the final tax return and the return for rights or things.

You cannot use the CRA sign-in services to access information for a deceased person, unless you are that person's representative. If not, you will have to contact us. Representatives (for example, an executor) can access My Account on behalf of a deceased person using Represent a Client.

In general, file and prepare the final individual income tax return of a deceased person the same way you would if the person were alive. Report all income up to the date of death and claim all eligible credits and deductions.

There is any refund in case of a deceased assessee, the refund can be received by the legal heir just like he/she can sign the Return of Income. So far as encashing the refund cheque is concerned, this can be done in any bank account where the deceased holder was a joint account holder with any other person.
