You are eligible for retirement from the Massachusetts State Employee Retirement System (MSERS) at any age with twenty or more years of state service or at age 55 or 60 (depending on hire date) with 10 or more years of state service.

Massachusetts is moderately tax-friendly toward retirees. Social Security income is not taxed.

Requirements. Own and occupy the property as of July 1 of the tax year. Must be 65 years old by July 1 of tax year. Own and occupy any real estate in Massachusetts for 5 years, or surviving spouse who inherited the property and occupied it, or other real property in Massachusetts for 5 years.

Certain government pensions, however, are exempt under Massachusetts law. In general, exempt pensions include contributory pensions from the U.S. Government or the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and its political subdivisions, and noncontributory military pensions.

To be eligible for service retirement, you must have at least five years of CalPERS-credited service and be at least age 50, 52, or 55 depending on your retirement formula .
