The explorers had their first council with a Sioux tribe, the Yankton, at Calumet Bluff on Aug. 30, 1804. The two groups met under the shade of an oak tree. Lewis delivered his customary speech, promoting commerce with the United States, and presented the chiefs with gifts of tobacco, clothing and peace medals.
Lewis had served under Clark during the Northwest Campaigns in the 1790's in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio where their friendship began. When Thomas Jefferson sought leadership for his proposed expedition to the Pacific, he immediately tapped Lewis, who in turn highly recommended Clark.
Lewis was obsessed—the term is not overstated—with defining his relationship to Clark. In a society that held back from discussing male-male intimacy, there was no way of labeling this thing that had so intensely developed between them during the brief six months they had served together.
Lewis and Clark reached the country of the Nez Perce on the Clearwater River in Idaho, and left their horses for dugout canoes. From there they made their way down the Clearwater, Snake, and Columbia rivers, reaching the Pacific Ocean by November 1805.
The two men first met in 1795 while serving as U.S. Army officers. Although their acquaintance was brief and they demonstrated very different personalities—Lewis was passionate and impetuous, while Clark was reserved and methodical—in 1803 they struck up a friendship that never wavered in the years that followed.
There they met a young Shoshone Native American woman called Sacagawea (Sa-kuh-juh-WEE-uh) and her fur-trader husband, Toussaint Charbonneau (Too-SAHNT SHAR-bon-oh). The couple joined the expedition as interpreters, translating the language of the local tribes for Lewis and Clark's men.
Sacagawea, the only woman member of the Lewis and Clark expedition, had two children. Her son, Jean Baptiste, was born in 1805 during the expedition. Her daughter, Lisette, was born in 1812.
On February 11, 1805, Sacagawea gave birth to a son, Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau, whom Clark later nicknamed "Pomp," meaning "first born" in Shoshone. With her her baby on her back and her husband by her side, Sacagawea and the men left Fort Mandan on April 7, 1805.
