BRCA1- and BRCA2-associated HBOC is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner.
Women as well as men can carry BRCA gene mutations. This means that a BRCA mutation could be inherited from your mother or father. The chance of a gene mutation passing from a parent or sibling is 50%. With each step away from your immediate family the risk reduces by half.
If your mother or father has a BRCA gene mutation, you have a 50% chance of having the same gene mutation. and ovarian cancers can also be caused by mutations in other genes. These mutations might be found through genetic testing.
Risk factors for BRCA mutations If any person (for example, a cousin, grandparent) in the family has a known mutation, testing may be a consideration. However, the gene does not skip generations, so if a family member has confirmed negative testing, their children do not need to worry.
BRCA1 mutations have also been linked to increases in cervical, esophagus, liver, stomach, and uterine cancers; however, the increased risks were inconsistent and ranged from one to four fold. Known environmental risk factors associated with these cancers were not typically reported in these studies.
Preventive mastectomies are done most often on women in their 30s and 40s, but women at both ends of the age spectrum also have this surgery. In some cases, the decision to have this surgery depends on when a woman discovered her hereditary risk.
