I used a backpack throughout law school and use one currently for work. Carrying textbooks and a computer, among other things, in a messenger bag is no joke on your shoulders/neck/back. For law school, I definitely recommend a backpack. In my experience, it's what most everyone else will have anyway.
Pens and pencils: I found pencil helpful for working out calculations because the maths can get a little messy. I found some really cool eco-friendly pencils on Amazon which are made from recycled newspaper! I have linked them here. Plastic tabs: Tabs will be your best friends during the LPC.
