FAQ

The English as a Second Language (ESL) programs at Maricopa Community Colleges can help you learn English, improve your English speaking and writing skills, gain confidence as an English speaker, and grow personally and professionally.

Most recently, in September 2022, the entry notes: “'English learners' is now preferred to 'English-language learners' when referring to students in programs where they learn the English language.”

More specifically, ESL refers to students who are learning English exclusively as a second language. This means they may have been raised to speak and write a different language and are now trying to learn English in addition to their native language.

ESL programs are designed to make grade level academic content accessible to English learners. ESL programs target English language development, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, through academic content instruction that is linguistically and culturally responsive.

Can I refuse ESL services for my child? Although PHA strongly recommends that all eligible students participate in the ESL program, parents/guardians have the right to “opt out” of direct ESL instruction on behalf of their child. If you wish to “opt out” of ESL instruction, please notify your child's teacher.

How to write meeting minutes reports Make an outline. Prior to the meeting, create an outline by picking or designing a template. Include factual information. Write down the purpose. Record decisions made. Add details for the next meeting. Be concise. Consider recording. Edit and proofread.

While your instructor may be well-informed on the topic, your purpose is to demonstrate your knowledge and fully explain what you're writing about, so the reader can see that you have a good grasp on the topic yourself. Think of your instructor as intelligent but not fully informed about your topic.

What Should Be Included in Meeting Minutes? Date and time of the meeting. Names of the meeting participants and those unable to attend (e.g., “regrets”) Acceptance or corrections/amendments to previous meeting minutes. Decisions made about each agenda item, for example: Actions taken or agreed to be taken. Next steps.

The format for a meeting depends on the meeting type and style. While there is no set format for meeting minutes, templates provide guidelines for essential information that should be included in your documentation.

How To Take Meeting Minutes Name of the organisation. Purpose of the meeting. Start and end times. Date and location. List of attendees and absentees. Space for important information, such as decisions made and responsibilities delegated. Space for signatures. An agenda (consult the meeting leader if in doubt)
