Sheriff Cordero-Stutz made history on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, becoming the first Hispanic woman elected sheriff in the state's history, and the first woman elected sheriff in Miami-Dade County history. It was a remarkable ascension for the sheriff, who joined the department in 1996.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) will commit its resources in partnership with the community to promote a safe and secure environment, maintain order, provide for the safe and expeditious flow of traffic, and practice our core values of integrity, respect, service and fairness.
The Florida Constitution mandates that one Sheriff exist for each of the 67 Florida counties. Each Sheriff has countywide jurisdiction.
The use of the “Department” implies being a subordinate unit of government (i.e. subordinate to local government – “delegated” authority from county government to department). The use of the term “Office” implies inherent powers and independent sovereignty.
