In California, out-of-state disabled drivers can apply for a travel placard that is valid for 90 days (however, out-of-state placards are also accepted in California). In many states (including New York and Florida), your disabled parking permit is recognized even if you're not a resident of the state.
Each state can do things a little differently, but for the most part, if you see a blue handicap placard, that means the person has a permanent parking permit. Other colors include: Red placards – for people with temporary disabilities. Light-blue placards – for disabled individuals who require the use of a wheelchair.
To renew a temporary placard or a moderate placard, applicants must submit a new application and have a new physician's signature certifying the disability. No renewal notices are mailed, and applicants are encouraged to order by mail. Permanent placard holders will be mailed a renewal notice .
If you are a permanent placard holder, you can renew your Disabled Parking Placard online. If a licensed doctor certified that you have a disability, you are eligible for a license plate.
