On Monday, the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) ratified a five-year contract covering nearly 200,000 public school workers across New York City. The contract, which will last until November 2027, went into effect immediately and is retroactive to September 2022 when the previous contract expired.

The Teacher's Union, Local 5, was organized in 1916 as an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers, (A.F. of L.) by Henry R. Linville, Abraham Lefkowitz and a few other pioneering teachers in New York City.

Salaries. As of January 2025, the starting salary for new teachers with a bachelor's degree and no teaching experience is $66,733 and $75,017 for those with a master's degree. Salaries are unique for each teacher depending on their educational background and experience.

State law requires DOE to submit a contract for excellence for the 2024-2025 school year. The contract for excellence provides information on how certain State aid will be used for designated activities that are designed to improve student achievement, with a focus on students with the greatest educational need.
