Ordinarily, insurance companies won't cover a car that doesn't have a valid NCT disc. It is also an offence under Irish law to drive a car that is due a visit to the NCT. However, due to the increasingly long wait times there has been generous leeway given by insurance companies and road traffic authorities alike.
You'll be fine as long as you don't have an accident. Drive on.

All vehicles receive an NCT Vehicle Inspection Report after the test. The report details test results and explains what faults (if any) have been found. You will also receive a pass certificate if your car has passed the test.
The NCT Regulations allow that a car may be tested up to 90 days in advance of the test due date without affecting the expiry date of the certificate issued. This system is in place to ensure all owners have sufficient time to have their vehicles successfully tested before the current certificate expires.
You can check your car's NCT due date by entering your registration number on the NCTS website.
