Massachusetts does not require that witnesses be present at your ceremony. The Officiant is responsible or completing and signing the original license and returning it to the clerk of the town where the license was issued. The officiant may be a member of the clergy, justice of the peace, or a one-day solemnizer.
Once your officiant-to-be gets the certificate — usually 2–4 weeks after applying — they have to file it with the city or town clerk that will issue your marriage license within 10 days of the ceremony.
Be sure to tell us about the change by the 10th day of the month after it happened. For example, if you get married on January 27th, tell us about the change to your marital status by February 10th. If you're not sure if the change is something that's important for our records, let us know anyway.
You can also have a friend or family member marry you with a One-Day Marriage Designation. Clergy from outside of Massachusetts can marry you as long as they get state authorization. To register your marriage, the person performing your ceremony needs to complete the license and return it to the City.
There's a 3-day waiting period once you apply for a marriage license. The license is valid for 60 days once you have it.

Your marriage license doesn't expire, so there is no deadline for a name change after marriage. You don't have a time limit that you must adhere to in order to change your name after marriage. In fact, many spouses and newly married couples may choose to wait to “see what happens” after they get married.
