The colonists ignored the Declaratory Act for the same reasons they ignored the Stamp Act, which the Declaratory Act helped repeal. They claimed their colonial assemblies were the only government bodies with the right to impose taxation and make laws.

The American Revolution began on the night of 10 June 1772 in the waters of coastal Rhode Island. In a violent waterborne assault a group of angry watermen and Sons of Liberty attacked the Royal Navy schooner Gaspee in Narragansett Bay, shot the captain and wounded some of his men, and burned the ship to the water.

Declaratory Act. An act for the better securing the dependency of his majesty's dominions in America upon the crown and parliament of Great Britain. This act was passed to assert the authority of the British government to tax its subjects in North America after it repealed the much-hated Stamp Act.

The Great Rebellion of 1766, a short-lived outburst directed against the manor lords, was a symptom of the widespread discontent among the lower and middle classes. By contrast, Pennsylvania's governmental system was more open and responsive than that of any other colony in America.

Repeal. The Stamp Act became one of the most controversial laws ever passed by Parliament, and after several months of protests and boycotts which damaged British trade, it was repealed on 18 March 1766.
