On Tuesday, November 8 of 2022 Maryland voters voted to approve a constitutional amendment to increase the minimum amount in controversy that guarantees a jury trial from $15,000 to $25,000. This change went into effect as of December 4, 2022.
In a Maryland jury trial, the defendant their attorney selects 12 people from a large pool of jurors. Those 12 people listen to all of the evidence against the Defendant and after hearing the evidence and legal arguments, decide whether the defendant is guilty or not guilty of the charges against him.

In civil cases the District Court has exclusive jurisdiction in claims for $5,000 or less, and concurrent jurisdiction with the circuit courts in claims for amounts above $5,000 but less than $30,000.
