FAQ

Yes, if you have an Optional Practical Training (OPT) Employment Authorization Document (EAD), you can work in a direct hire W-2 position in the USA. OPT allows international students on F-1 visas to work in their field of study for up to 12 months (with a possible extension for STEM graduates).

OPT applications are rejected frequently due to missing or inaccurate information. Here's a checklist to ensure your documents are correct: Form I-765: Use the latest version from the USCIS website, fill in all required fields, and check your answers carefully.

Rules to follow while on OPT All employment must be related to your major field of study. You must report all employment and address changes to BIO within 10 days of any change (see Reporting Requirements). You are limited to 90 days of unemployment during your OPT.

Student must submit an OPT Employment Update via Trojan International within 10 days of any employment update (i.e. adding employer, layoff, quitting, changing employers, etc.) Important: Student can utilize the SEVP Portal to view their employment information.

You can only report new employment within 10 days of the employment start date. If you fail to report within 10 days or cannot access the SEVP OPT Portal, you can use the OPT Employer update request at the international student portal. ISS will then manually update your SEVIS record with the employment information.

Rules to follow while on OPT All employment must be related to your major field of study. You must report all employment and address changes to BIO within 10 days of any change (see Reporting Requirements). You are limited to 90 days of unemployment during your OPT.

You are still considered to be in F-1 student status while on OPT and will continue to use your F-1 visa stamp for any travel during your OPT period. To maintain status on OPT, you must either work at job(s) directly related to your major/level of study or actively seek employment in your major/level of study.

Traveling while on OPT or OPT STEM Extension The student must not have exceeded the maximum OPT unemployment or OPT STEM Extension unemployment time and must not have been absent from the US for more than 5 months.

If you need to report a new employer or update your employment information, complete the Add New Employer or Update Current OPT Employer Information form in the "F-1 Practical Training” menu. Once reported, ISSS will issue a new Form I-20 that will contain a travel signature valid for 6 months from the date of update.

You will be reporting and updating your employment information in the SEVP Portal. The SEVP Portal allows OPT students to report their address, telephone number and employer information. The portal shares information with SEVIS, but does not give students direct access to SEVIS.
