Nonimmigrant visa holders are typically required to have a work permit (EAD) before being hired to work in the U.S. In most cases, obtaining a work permit will allow you to work for any employer. And you do not have to work in any specific trade or profession.
You need to carry your EAD at all times because it's proof of your immigration status. What if you run into an ICE raid and don't have your EAD with you? You're getting arrested and taken into custody until they verify your status.
If you are approved for OPT/STEM while outside the United States, you will need to arrange for your EAD card to be sent to you in order to re-enter the United States. If your F-1 visa is expired, you will need to reapply for an F-1 visa with your EAD card and proof of employment.
Traveling while on OPT or OPT STEM Extension The student must not have exceeded the maximum OPT unemployment or OPT STEM Extension unemployment time and must not have been absent from the US for more than 5 months.
Can I fly with a foreign passport or Employment Authorization Document Card? Yes, as noted above, the list of approved identification to fly domestically includes foreign government-issued passports and/or a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766).
You can apply for OPT up to 90 days before and up to 60 days after your expected program completion date. In addition, USCIS must receive your application within 30 days of when BIO recommends your I-20 for OPT. You must be physically present in the United States at the time USCIS receives your OPT application.
With an approved OPT application and your EAD card, you may travel internationally, and request entry into the U.S in F-1 status when you return, both before or after the start date on your EAD card. I-20 with OPT recommendation and an unexpired travel signature (signature valid for six months when on OPT).
You must not have used OPT at a higher degree level. For example, if you complete a Phd, then use OPT, and then complete a Master's-level program, you will not be eligible for OPT for the Master's level. You must be in the U.S. to apply.
You can call USCIS, tell them about the error, and ask them to correct it. You may want to work with an immigration attorney before attempting to correct your application. If USCIS has already acted on your application they may notice the error before you do.
If you've received an EAD Card but it contains incorrect information due to an USCIS error (e.g., typo in name or incorrect birthdate), you must return the original EAD card to get it corrected by USCIS. USCIS will issue a corrected EAD within 30 - 45 days of receiving the EAD that contains the error.
