FAQ

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is the “immigration” term for an internship. “CO- OP” is the “BCC” term for an internship. It is the same thing. CO-OP is offered to any student that is in a major in which a CO-OP is offered.

CPT is defined as alternative work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum that is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school which must be "an integral part of an established curriculum" (8 CFR 241.2(f)(10)).

If all requirements are met, the advisor will approve your CPT and create a CPT I-20 showing this approval. Normal processing time is 1-2 weeks. Expect processing time to be 2 full weeks during peak request times such as April, September and January. You will receive an e-mail once your CPT I-20 is ready.

CPT is authorized by a Designated School Official (DSO) at International Student Services (ISS). It may take ISS 15 business days to review and approve a student's CPT request. An F-1 student must request authorization from the school at which they are enrolled full-time with their F-1 I-20.

CPT review and processing can take up to 15 business days. Authorized CPT dates may be able to be shortened or extended with the permission of the student, employer, and the student's academic/faculty/career advisor and ISS approval.

CPT combined with On-Campus Work: During Spring or Fall semester, if you plan to work on-campus while on approved part-time CPT, you are limited to no more than 20 hours per week for on-campus employment and no more than 20 hours per week for part-time CPT.

As a F-1 visa holder, you can work full time with CPT authorization. Students must choose between full-time CPT and part-time CPT. Students who pick full-time CPT may work as many as 40 hours a week, while students who choose part-time CPT may work up to 20 hours per week.

Employment for 20 hours or less per week is considered part-time CPT; employment of more than 20 hours per week is considered full-time CPT. There is no limitation on the length of time you may participate in part-time CPT but you must be careful to limit your work to no more than 20 hours per week.
