FAQ

How does an F-1 student become eligible for CPT? How much CPT employment is allotted to each student? Students can be approved for either part-time or full-time CPT. Part-time CPT allows you to work 20 hours or less per week, while full-time CPT is required for any work that will be more than 20 hours per week.

Part-time and full-time practical training is defined by immigration as: Part-time CPT- 20 hours or less per week. Full-time CPT- more than 20 hours per week.

During break periods between quarters and during the summer break, you are eligible for full-time CPT (up to 40 hours/week). However, the combined total work hours of both on-campus work and CPT are not to exceed 40 hours per week.

There is no legal limit on the number of hours you can work when authorized for full time CPT. The employer would need to comply with the state's wage and hour laws, including overtime, but that is not a concern for your maintaining your F-1 status.

However, all employment must be 20 or more hours per week to qualify as “full time” and must always be related to the field of study. Similarly, there is no maximum number of hours per week that a student can work on OPT (unless you count 168 hours–the number of hours in a week–as a maximum).

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is the “immigration” term for an internship. “CO- OP” is the “BCC” term for an internship. It is the same thing. CO-OP is offered to any student that is in a major in which a CO-OP is offered.

CPT is authorized by a Designated School Official (DSO) at International Student Services (ISS). It may take ISS 15 business days to review and approve a student's CPT request. An F-1 student must request authorization from the school at which they are enrolled full-time with their F-1 I-20.

CPT is defined as alternative work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum that is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school which must be "an integral part of an established curriculum" (8 CFR 241.2(f)(10)).

Can I work more than 40 hours per week if I am authorized for full-time CPT? Yes, during the summer term. Full-time employment is defined by USCIS as employment for more than 20 hours per week.
