Fairfax Co.'s Woodson High officially gets new name. School officials rededicated Woodson High School in tribute to Carter G. Woodson, a Virginia native credited with being the "father of African American history."
While the school is known as Woodson High, it was originally named for Wilbert Tucker Woodson or W.T. Woodson, FCPS' second longest-serving superintendent, who led the school system from 1929–1961. Historical documents showed he opposed desegregation, leading the community to ask for a name change.
Unanimous Board Decision Honors Civil Rights Leader The Fairfax County School Board voted to rename Robert E. Lee High School after the late U.S. Congressman John R. Lewis at its business meeting on July 23, 2020. The new name will be effective for the 2020-21 school year.
In 2020, for instance, Fairfax renamed Robert E. Lee High School to John R. Lewis High School in honor of the late civil rights icon and Georgia congressman, and in 2017 the school board voted to rename J.E.B.
