The test usually takes about 10 minutes. A healthcare professional will take a small amount of blood, usually from the inside of your elbow, using a needle. Sometimes blood may be taken from your wrist, or your finger (called a finger-prick test).
Blood test If you're having blood drawn, a pathology collector will need access to the veins in your mid-arm (at the front of your elbow) and your upper arm to apply a tourniquet. Wear loose clothing that gives easy access to these areas. Think t-shirts, sleeveless tops or shirts with sleeves that roll up all the way.
Adult blood tests We run a walk-in service at both hospital sites Mon–Fri, 8am–pm (excluding bank holidays). The phlebotomy department is located on the Lower Ground Floor at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and on the Ground Floor at West Middlesex University Hospital.

Ing to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the actual blood draw usually takes less than 3 minutes, and the results can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few weeks to come back. The laboratory that tests the blood sample usually sends the results back to the doctor's office.
