Your officiant will file it with the county on your behalf, and the county will mail it back to you within a few weeks to confirm that everything is official.
The process for a marriage license may take 30 minutes depending on several factors, such as whether you have completed the online form prior to coming into the office or if you do this process in our office. Also, there may be other people in line. Please allow yourself enough time.
California marriage licenses are only valid for 90 days, so you must obtain your marriage license within the 90 days immediately prior to your wedding date. No blood test is required. There is no waiting period. The clerk will give you your license immediately.
Both parties must possess a valid government issued picture identification that includes the full legal name and date of birth. Both parties must be unmarried and at least 18 years of age. If a minor is obtaining a marriage license, a certified copy of the court order is required.
If the marriage license is not acceptable for registration, the license will be rejected and a duplicate marriage license will be issued. A duplicate license will require the person solemnizing the marriage to sign again.
You can contact the Clerk of the Court of any county for them to issue a Public or Confidential Marriage License. Some counties like Kern County are open to the public and offer same day service. A license issued from ANY county is good for use throughout the state.

Applications for CAPI are taken in the General Assistance offices. There are three General Assistance units located in Contra Costa County. If you want to apply for CAPI or get more information on your eligibility to CAPI, please call or visit the nearest office.
All Probate, Guardianship and Conservatorship documents are filed and heard in the Wakefield Taylor Courthouse in Martinez.
How long should it take to process my application? All CAPI applications must be processed as soon as possible but no later than thirty (30) calendar days from the date the application was filed. The County must notify the applicant if eligible or not, no later than 30 calendar days from the date of application.
