Petitioner: The petitioner must complete an Affidavit of Support Form I-864. The person who signs the Affidavit of Support is also called the "sponsor.Use this form to show they have adequate means of financial support and are not likely to rely on the US government for financial support. Completing and signing Form I-864 makes you the sponsor. Form I864, Affidavit of Support, needs to be filed DHS if you are a U.S. citizen or LPR planning to sponsor a spouse or family member. Affidavit and financial documents must be less than six (6) months old at the time of applying. Be sure to complete both sides of this form. Students who plan to stay in the United States through the summer will need additional money for that three-month period. INA §§ 213A(a)(2), (a)(3); 8 CFR § 213a.2(e)(2)(i). Some sponsors temporarily reside abroad and intend to move to the US once a family member's immigrant visa is issued.
