Respondent superior is a legal doctrine that holds employers responsible for the actions of their employees, performed within the scope of their employment. This concept is derived from the Latin phrase meaning "let the master answer." Under the doctrine, an employer can be held liable for the negligence or wrongful acts committed by their employees while acting in the course of their employment, thus shifting the legal responsibility from the employee to the employer. There are various types of Respondent superior, including vicarious liability, where an employer is held automatically responsible for the actions of an employee; negligence-based liability, where the employer's own negligence is a determining factor; and non-renewable duty, which refers to situations where the employer's duty of care cannot be transferred to others.
