Based on enrollment, requests for reclassification and the tournament performance factor, the WIAA will then determine in which classification-level a school should compete.
The Athletic Placement Process permits pupils in the 7th and 8th grades to compete in senior high school competition provided that they meet the standards of the program. A pupil shall be eligible for interschool competition in grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 until his/her 19th birthday.
A student-athlete is eligible for interscholastic competition at a member school if he/she is carried on the attendance rolls as a duly enrolled full-time Grade 9, 10, 11 or 12 student in that member school.
9th grade students who transfer after the beginning of the school year and with written consent from both schools directly involved shall be restricted to non varsity opportunities for the remainder of the school year. Restrictions are removed upon entering 10th grade.
An 8th grade student may, at the student's option, become eligible for interscholastic athletics at the high school level when the student attains his/her 15th birthday before August 1 of the ensuing school year.
Junior high/middle level students (Grades 6-8) are not eligible to compete with or against students enrolled in Grades 9-12. Students at private schools may be afforded eligibility at the community/local public middle level/junior high school provided that the private school is also a WIAA member.
PHILOSOPHY OF GENDER IDENTITY PARTICIPATION: The WIAA allows participation for all students regardless of their gender identity or expression.
Combining contests in both the middle level and high school level, an eighth grader may participate in up to the maximum number of high school contests. Also refer to the specific sport sections in this WIAA handbook to verify daily, weekly or season limitations.
