In Texas, there is a standard homestead exemption that is offered by public school districts for primary residences. Before November 2023, this amount was $40,000; however, a constitutional amendment has more than doubled the amount to a generous $100,000. This exemption reduces the taxable value of your property.

The State of Georgia offers homestead exemptions to all qualifying homeowners. In some counties they have increased the amounts of their homestead exemptions by local legislation above the amounts offered by the State. As a general rule the exemptions offered by the county are more beneficial to the homeowner.

You must be 65 years old or older. You must be living in the home to which the exemption applies on January 1 of the year for which the exemption applies. Your net income, or the combined net income of you and your spouse must not be greater than $10,000 for the preceding year.

When applying, you must provide proof of Georgia residency. This is an exemption from all taxes in the school general and school bond tax categories. In order to qualify, you must be 62 years of age on or before January 1 of the current tax year.
