A civil complaint is a legal document that initiates a lawsuit and informs the person being sued of the claims against them. It lays out the facts and reasons that support the plaintiff's claim against the defendant. It also states the compensation or relief sought by the plaintiff and why they are entitled to it.

Your complaint must contain a caption (or heading) that includes the name of the court and county, the parties to the case (and their designation, like plaintiff or defendant), the case number (if you have one), and the title of the document.

File an answer. The most common way to respond to a complaint is by filing an answer. Negotiate. Being served with a lawsuit does not automatically mean you need to appear in court. Request more information from the plaintiff. Cross-complain. File a motion to dismiss.

Read the summons and make sure you know the date you must answer by. Read the complaint carefully. Write your answer. Sign and date the answer. Make copies for the plaintiff and yourself. Mail a copy to the plaintiff. File your answer with the court by the date on the summons.

Write the letter in a polite manner. Always introduce yourself first at the left of the letter. Never forget to mention the date of writing the letter. The letter of receiver or recipient should be properly mentioned along with Pincode. Mention the purpose of writing a letter in the subject line.

When drafting an answer, one must: (1) follow the local, state, and federal court rules; (2) research the legal claims in the adversary's complaint; (3) respond to the adversary's factual allegations; and (4) assert affirmative defenses, counterclaims, cross-claims, or third-party claims, if applicable.
