Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding behavior. ABA refers to a set of principles that focus on how behaviors change, or are affected by the environment, as well as how learning takes place. Modeling involves demonstrating the desired behavior in ABA therapy. The therapist may provide an in-person, a video, or an audio example of what the individual is expected to do. For example, the individual may be instructed to shake hands when meeting a new person or to say thank you when given an object.

Suppose for example that your child hits another child to get their attention. Upon seeing this behavior, your child's ABA therapist may either say something or tap your child on the shoulder. This breaks into the behavior that is occurring. The therapist may then direct your child to repeat a phrase like, ?excuse me?.

Every time you give your dog a treat when he sits after being told, or when you ignore your cat meowing incessantly, you are using principles of ABA.
