Health Policy team. The BMI centile is a simple and reliable indicator of a healthy body weight in childhood. Where severe overweight or underweight is a concern, or where there is a need for monitoring weight over time, BMI can be calculated and plotted on this chart.

A baby on the 50th percentile for weight is right in the middle of the normal weight range: 50% of babies their age are lighter, and 50% are heavier. A baby on the 5th percentile weighs less than 95% of other babies of that age. A baby on the 90th percentile weights more than 90% of other babies that age.

BMI-for-age percentile shows how your child's weight compares to that of other children of the same age and sex. For example, a BMI-for-age percentile of 65 means that the child's weight is greater than that of 65% of other children of the same age and sex.

If the child is under 2 years old, BMI cannot be calculated. Consult a healthcare provider for assessment. Based on the Birth Date and Date of Measurement, the calculated age is 20 years or older.

For children and teens, healthy weight status is based on BMI between the 5th and 85th percentile on the CDC growth charts.

The BMI-for-age chart shows age-related changes in growth and can be used up to age 20. With the BMI-for-age chart weight, stature and age of a child are considered whereas with the weight-for-stature chart, only weight and height are used. BMI changes substantially with age.

Adult Body Mass Index If your BMI is less than 18.5, it falls within the underweight range. If your BMI is 18.5 to <25, it falls within the healthy weight range. If your BMI is 25.0 to <30, it falls within the overweight range. If your BMI is 30.0 or higher, it falls within the obesity range.

Initial weight status is measured as BMI (kg/m2) and constructed from self-reported weight and height at first interview. Weight change is measured in BMI units and is based on weight change between the first two interviews, which are approximately two years apart.
