Equal pay is an important trade union issue and Unite strongly believes that we must tackle this inequality and tackle IT now. Unite has often found that women are segregated in the workplace both in the type of work that they do and by remaining on the lower grades.

Equal pay is a woman's right to be paid the same as a man for comparable work, work rated as equivalent, or work of equal value. It zooms in on specific comparisons, scrutinising every aspect, from base salaries to bonuses and pensions.

An example of a collective agreement could be where a trade union has negotiated with an employer that the entire workforce be eligible to make a flexible working request from day one of employment, rather than waiting 26 weeks.

Union wages are set by contract. This means that, unlike non-union workplaces, union workers do not have to worry about pay or benefit cuts for the duration of their contract.
