Bates numbering is a way to identify every specific piece of a production by assigning a unique, sequential identification number to each page, file, or image.

To remove Bates numbers from a PDF file: On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Marks group, click the arrow next to Bates Number and click Remove Bates Numbering. Click OK at the confirmation prompt, and the tool will scan the document and remove all instances of Bates numbering.

Bates numbering is a method of indexing legal documents for easy identification and retrieval. Each page of each document is assigned a unique Bates number that also indicates its relationship to other Bates-numbered documents. Bates numbers appear as headers or footers on the pages of each PDF in the batch.

If you have Acrobat Pro create a new Action (via Tools - Action Wizard) with the Remove Bates Numbering command and a Save command and then run it on your files.

You cannot edit Bates page numbering after you've added it to a document. You can, however, delete Bates numbering and apply a different Bates numbering formula.

Select Edit > Insert > Bates Numbering > Remove to permanently remove Bates numbers from currently open files. Other header and/or footer elements, if any, are retained. An information box instructs you how to interpret the results of the operation.

But, consistent with The Bluebook, the first citation should make it very clear what is being referenced, such as (Bates Jones000001) or (Bates d123-002), and subsequent consecutive cites should follow the usual practice of Id. followed by the page number, such as (Id. 000017) or (Id. -017).

1) To search for documents that have Bates numbers, choose the associated Bates prefix in the dropdown menu. To search for documents that were processed by Everlaw (and therefore have control numbers), choose the "#" prefix. Selecting ?Any Prefix? will perform a search across all prefixes in your dataset.
