Labelling Tables and Figures Figure captions are generally placed below the figures, while table captions must be placed above the tables. This is because we generally read tables from the top down, and therefore want to see the caption at the top. Figures are not always read top down.

Table captions should appear above the associated table. Figure captions should appear below the associated figure. Unless formatted as a multi-page table or figure (with a ?Continued? caption ? see below instructions), the entire caption must appear on the same page as the associated table or figure.

Tables & Figures: Tables Place the title of the table (in title case and italics), double-spaced, under the table number, flush left. Double-space before and after the table. Information regarding abbreviations or symbols used in a table, copyright information, and probability must be located in a Note below the table.

A table title appears above or below a table and is repeated on all pages of a multipage table. Whether a table has a title and how it's formatted is defined in the table style. When you insert a table with a title, an empty text frame appears for the title.

Select the object (table, equation, figure, or another object) that you want to add a caption to. On the References tab, in the Captions group, click Insert Caption. On the Captions dialog box, click AutoCaption, and then select the check boxes for the items that you want Word to automatically add captions to.

The general advice is to place the figure/table as close to the reference as possible. It doesn't matter - chances are the journal will mess with the formatting anyway. Ideally, figures and tables are on the same page as the reference and (field-dependent?) are put at the top of the page rather than in-line.

Captions for tables are placed above the table (typically left aligned), and captions for figures are placed below the figure.
