Structural columns are used to model vertical load-bearing elements in a building. Although structural columns share many of the same properties as architectural columns, structural columns have additional properties defined by their configuration and industry standards.

A post is a main vertical or leaning support in a structure similar to a column or pillar, the term post generally refers to a timber but may be metal or stone. A stud in wooden or metal building construction is similar but lighter duty than a post and a strut may be similar to a stud or act as a brace.

Columns act as a structural element that transfers loads from the slab, (i.e., roof, upper floor) to the foundation and finally to the soil beneath a structure. They are typically vertically oriented. In construction, columns are used in trusses, building frames, and structure support for bridges.

While Posts and Columns are both vertical load-bearing members, a column is the main vertical support used in concrete construction, while a post is made of timber. A post may be erected from wood or metal, but not from concrete. Posts are also often mistaken for studs which are lighter vertical members.

Column and beam are the main parts of the structural frame. Beams transfer the total loads from the slab to the column and columns carry it to the foundation and provide stability to the structure.

A Column may be rectangular, square, circular or polygon in cross section. A Column may be short or long column depending on its effective slenderness ratio. A short column has a maxm slenderness ratio of 12.

The term column applies especially to a large round support (the shaft of the column) with a capital and a base or pedestal, which is made of stone, or appearing to be so. A small wooden or metal support is typically called a post. Supports with a rectangular or other non-round section are usually called piers.

Column sections can be rectangular, round, square, octagonal, hexagonal as per requirements. Generally tied columns may be square and rectangular while spiral columns are circular. Circular columns are used when higher elevation is needed like in piles, bridges pillars.

Structural columns are made of materials that can bear substantial weight: wood, aluminum, or fiberglass composites. Non- structural columns are made of polymers. Some are hollow and may receive weight-bearing wood or metal posts. They come in many classic shapes and are typically sold in increments of 4 feet.

Columns can hold an incredible amount of weight and are designed to be load-bearing as part of the architectural design. Unlike pillars, columns are solely used and constructed to support substantial amounts of weight that otherwise couldn't stand up on its own.
