Talking Sticks is a management strategy that encourages all students to participate equally in a discussion. It involves giving each student 2 or 3 craft sticks to use during a discussion to signal that he or she would like to speak. When the student is called upon, the stick is placed in a cup or container.

When each student is in possession of the stick, he or she is asked to speak whatever comes to their mind on the topic. The others are to listen with an open mind; and with no self-rehearsal going on in their minds, concerning what they will say. Then the next student speaks and so on.
