On the References Ribbon Tab there is a Footnotes Section. Click on the dialog launcher icon in the bottom right corner of that section of the ribbon - it opens the Footnote and Endnote dialog where you can specify how many columns you want for the Footnote Layout.

Move a footnote or an endnote To move or copy a note, you work with the note reference mark in the document window, not with the text of the note. Select the note reference mark. Drag the mark to the new location.

The Footnotes pane appears at the bottom of your document. You can edit the color or style of the separator by choosing options on the Home tab, or, to delete the separators, click Footnote Separator in the Footnotes list, and then select and delete the separator line.

Answer Press Ctrl+Shift+S to Apply Styles. Footnote Text. Click Modify. Click Format. Select Paragraph. Under Line and Page Breaks tab. Check box by Keep lines together. Click OK.

You can only have one footnote with a given reference number on a page. For your purposes, you might do better to use endnotes and, for cases referring to the same endnote #, insert a cross-reference to that #.

Footnotes go at the bottom of the page where the reference occurs; endnotes go on a separate page after the body of the paper. Both use the same formatting guidelines.
