A building permit is required for most non-residential construction, new homes, and when existing homes are remodeled or additions are made. The permit is issued when structures are designed in ance with the building codes and all other applicable codes and ordinances, to ensure the safety of the structure.

Building permits are required for all structures with the exception of a structure that is less than 200 square feet with no electrical, plumbing or mechanical.

In general, a building permit is required when any structural change or major alteration is made to a building or when any new construction is undertaken. Every Residential Building Permit issued shall become invalid unless the work authorized by such permit is completed within 365 days from the issuance date of the building permit. The Building Official is authorized to grant, when request for extension is received in writing, one extension not to exceed 180 days.
