The title: The title should tell the readers ?This is what this figure is about? very clearly. Use active voice, and keep it short. Make it a sentence that summarize the major result seen in the figure. Example: Hippocampal neurons derived from patients with bipolar disorder show hyperexcitability.

All graphs, diagrams and images should be titled as Figures. These will be numbered consecutively throughout the dissertation: Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, and so on. After the numbering, there should be a short and concise title. Titles for figures appear below the figure itself.

Figure components Number figures in the order in which they are mentioned in your paper. title: The figure title appears one double-spaced line below the figure number. Give each figure a brief but descriptive title, and capitalize the figure title in italic title case.

Summarize the chart data in plain English You should try to encapsulate the entire story the chart is telling you. The caption occupies the top-most place in a chart, and the user can know what to look for in the chart. For instance, in the chart below, the caption doesn't tell the user what the comparison is about.

This subtle difference changes the way a reader uses the chart, meaning that in a line chart it's ok to start the axis at a value other than zero, despite many claims that they are always misleading. (Bar charts should always start at zero ? I'll explain why in my next post.)
