The Electronic Signatures Directive 1999/93/EC was a European Union directive on the use of electronic signatures (e-signatures) in electronic contracts within the European Union (EU). Regulation 910/2014 (eIDAS) from 1 July 2016. It was repealed by the eIDAS regulation on 1 July 2016.

The eSignature Directive established the legal framework at European level for electronic signatures and certification services. A reliable system of electronic signatures that work across EU countries is vital for safe electronic commerce and efficient electronic delivery of public services to businesses and citizens.

A qualified electronic signature is an electronic signature that is compliant with EU Regulation No 910/2014 (eIDAS Regulation) for electronic transactions within the internal European market. The signer must have complete control over the data used in the generation of the electronic signature by directly affixing their e-signatures to the document. As given in the e-signing laws in India, any alterations to the affixed e-signature must be detectable after the e-signing by the use of a tamper-evident seal.
