You'll write four kinds of notes in fieldwork: jottings, a diary, a log, and field notes proper.

Why are the field notes important? Field notes are crucial to the documentation of a crime scene. The field notes are an investigator's most personal and readily available records of the crime scene search.

There are three kinds of field notes: methodological notes, descriptive notes, and analytic notes.

Generally, there are two components of fieldnotes: descriptive information and reflective information. Descriptive information is factual data that is being recorded.

Your field notes should provide a rich and detailed account of what you see, hear, feel, and experience in the field. Use descriptive language to capture the context, setting, actions, interactions, and emotions of the people and events you observe.

Field notes serve the following functions: First, they work as descriptions: you write them as notes and details of time, date, activities, settings, observations, behavior and conversations in the field. Field notes keep track of observations that you generally tend to forget over time.

Should be written immediately after the interview. Include: names of narrator and interviewer, date, time, location interview took place, language in which interview was conducted, and a list of ephemera materials.

Descriptive information, in which you attempt to accurately document factual data [e.g., date and time] along with the settings, actions, behaviors, and conversations that you observe; and, Reflective information, in which you record your thoughts, ideas, questions, and concerns during the observation.

Nigel Rapport said that fieldnotes in anthropology transition rapidly among three types. Inscription ? where the writer records notes, impressions, and potentially important keywords. Transcription ? where the author writes down dictated local text.

Fieldnotes are the record of your fieldwork that provides a description of the ?culture? you're working with for your study. Fieldnotes are most often taken during observations, but a researcher could also take fieldnotes for other research methods.
