As per IS400, concrete is graded into 15 types: Ordinary Concrete M10, M15, M20, Standard concrete M25, M30, M35, M40, M45, M50, M55, and High strength concrete M60, M65, M70, M75, M80.

M25 is concrete with a compressive strength of 25 MPa. This type of concrete is used mainly to construct beams, columns, and foundations, i.e., the most important parts of a building. It is made of cement, sand, and coarse aggregate.

Modulus of elasticity of the M20 concrete is 22360MPa and M25 grade concrete is 25000Mpa. The behavior of M25 concrete is stiffer than M20. It can take more loads. The deflection is less as compared to M20 concrete as shown in fig.

Grade of concrete is denoted by prefixing M to the desired strength in MPa. For example, for a grade of concrete with 20 MPa strength, it will be denoted by M20, where M stands for Mix. These grade of concrete is converted into various mix proportions.

Concrete Mix Design IS Code The process of determining these ingredients is given in IS 10262. IS 10262 explains the proper procedure for determining the different ingredients of concrete. After properly preparing the design mix with the help of IS 10262, concrete structures will be prepared ing to IS 456.

Nominal concrete mix ratio: Standard arbitrary proportions of concrete ingredients are used in the nominal mix concrete. Standard concrete mix ratio: This type of concrete mix is mostly used in general construction. The proportions are one part cement, two parts sand and four parts coarse materials.

Nominal mix design: IS 400 provides a more precise nominal mix proportion for M5, M7. 5, M10, M15, and M20 grades of concrete in terms of the total mass of aggregates, proportions of fines to coarse aggregates, and volume of water to be used per 50 kg of cement.

In M25 and M30, M30 will be more stronger as its characteristic compressive strength is 30Mpa and M25 has only 25 Mpa.
