It is preferred that all City, State, and ZIP Code information be on a single line. If that is not possible, the ZIP Code, including the ZIP+4 Code, may be placed below the city/state information.

Primary state prefixes. ZIP Codes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region in that group (or perhaps a large city) and the fourth and fifth digits representing a group of delivery addresses within that region.

The most complete ZIP Code is a nine-digit number consisting of five digits, a hyphen, and four digits, which the USPS describes by its trademark ZIP+4. The correct format for a numeric ZIP+4 code is five digits, a hyphen, and four digits.

Although most ZIP Codes can be roughly assigned to a geographic area, ZIP Codes do not represent geographic regions. ZIP Codes denote street address groups or delivery routes. Because of this, ZIP Code "areas" can overlap, be contained within another ZIP Code, or have no geographic area.

Place the recipient's name on the first line. On the second line, write the building number and street name. Include the city, state and ZIP code on the final line.

Put the city, state and ZIP Code or ZIP + 4 code in that order on the last line. If there's not enough room, you can put the ZIP Code or ZIP + 4 codes alone on the bottom line. Use standard two-letter state abbreviations.

The zip code contains numbers only, whereas postal code comprises of numbers or a combination of numbers and letters, and sometimes punctuations are also included in the code along with the numbers and letters.
