1 Answer. This journal (like many if not most journals) publishes articles online before formally assigning them to issues. Cite the issue date. Prior to most journals moving completely online, journals would formally accept articles and then take weeks to months before publishing articles.

There no practical difference between the two. The more usual term is "publication date." This is the date on which a book or periodical is published (or is planned to be published). While on the subject, there is a thing called cover date. This is the date shown on the covers of periodicals, magazines and comic books.

General rules: Enclose the date within parentheses for both in-text citations and for the reference list. For the date in the reference list, enclose the date with parentheses and follow with a period. For dates with month values spell out the name of the month. For books use the copyright date.
