Canadian work permits are typically valid for a period of 1-2 years, with some exceptions. A visa officer will usually not issue a work permit for longer than the validity of an applicant's passport or past the validity indicated on the applicant's Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

If you want to study in Canada longer, you need to extend your study permit. You should apply to extend your study permit at least 30 days before your current permit expires. However, we recommend you apply more than 30 days before it expires.

PGWP holders who want to extend their stay in Canada as a worker are usually expected to apply for another type of work permit as their PGWP expires. Public policies previously adopted in 2021 and 2022 provided the opportunity for an additional work permit for those with expiring PGWPs.

You can't extend your work permit beyond the expiry date of your passport. Make sure your passport won't expire before the requested end date of your permit.

It is noted that Automatic Extension of Period Clause provides policyholder an option to extend the base policy cover by a specified period and additional pro-rata premium is being charged for the same.

Note: There is no limit on the number of extensions, providing the individual continues to comply with the requirements (see section 3.7 of the NAFTA).

It is not possible to renew a spousal open work permit. If your permit expires, but your spouse or partner still has eligible status in Canada, you may re-apply for a new SOWP.
