It gained its name from the Bates Automatic Numbering-Machine, patented in the 1890s by Edwin G. Bates. This sequential-numbering stamp was used to manually mark each page in a record.

To remove Bates numbers from a PDF file: On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Marks group, click the arrow next to Bates Number and click Remove Bates Numbering. Click OK at the confirmation prompt, and the tool will scan the document and remove all instances of Bates numbering.

There is nothing built into Word to do this. If you convert to pdf, Adobe Acrobat can do it.

In the Add Header and Footer dialog box click Page Number and Date Format? and select the proper start page number. Under the Appearance Options put your cursor where you want the page number to appear then click Insert Bates Number. Set your preference.
