Insert comments in a document To add a new comment in Reading View, select the text you want to add a comment about, and then click Comments > New Comment. To view comments in Edit View, click Review > Show Comments. To add a new comment, click Review > New Comment.

Modern Comments are available only if you're using Word for Microsoft 365. If you're using an older version of Office, you'll still see comments from other users, but in the classic Comments experience.

Word won't allow you to add comments to text within a text box, as you can to regular text in your document. If you absolutely must have comments in your text boxes, there are two possible solutions. The first is to work around it by just adding hidden text in the text box.
