If your footnotes are mostly quite short, and especially if they are few, you may never see the Footnote Continuation Separator. It is used when a footnote is too long to fit on the page and must be continued on the following page.

Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote. Return to your place in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the beginning of the note.

The most commonly recommended abbreviation for ?continued? is cont. Cont'd is also a correct way to make continued shorter.

To change the formatting of the footnote numbers, select the Footnotes Reference Style. If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style.

In your document, click where you want to insert the note reference mark. On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Location, click Footnotes or Endnotes, and then on the Footnotes or Endnotes pop-up menu, click the location that you want. Under Format, select the numbering options that you want, and then click Insert.

Select the symbol you'd like to use to label your notes, and then click the ?OK? button. Your selected icon should appear in the ?Custom Mark? box, and Word will now use this symbol to label your notes. By default, Word numbers footnotes and endnotes in individual series starting at ?1? (or a, i, I, etc.)

Add footnotes and endnotes Click where you want to add the footnote. Click Insert > Insert Footnote. Word inserts a reference mark in the text and adds the footnote mark at the bottom of the page. Type the footnote text.

If a footnote or endnote overflows onto the next page, you can create a continuation notice to let readers know that a footnote or endnote is continued on the next page. Switch to normal view. On the View menu, click Footnotes. If your document contains both footnotes and endnotes, a message appears.

Footnotes appear at the bottom of the page and endnotes come at the end of the document. A number or symbol on the footnote or endnote matches up with a reference mark in the document. Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote.
