The American Bar Association (ABA) is the largest voluntary organization of lawyers and law students in the United States and the world. The professional organization was founded on August 21, 1878, in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., by 100 lawyers from 21 states.

The mission of the ABA is to be the national representative of the legal profession, serving the public and the profession by promoting justice, professional excellence, and respect for the law.

The governing structure of the American Bar Association is composed of a House of Delegates, a Board of Governors, a president, a president-elect, a chair of the House of Delegates, a secretary and a treasurer. The House of Delegates is a group of 560 members who are the policy-making body of the ABA.

The ABA House of Delegates (House) has ultimate authority for establishing Association policy. This policy-making body is composed of approximately 550 delegates who represent various groups within the ABA and legal profession as a whole.
