The equations editor in Word 2007 is quite useful and fairly quick, when you know a few simple shortcuts. First, ?Alt+=? will insert an equation. All of these tips use the format ?collection_of_symbols {space}?, where ?{space}? is the space bar.

If you need to use an equation, add or write it in Word. Select Insert > Equation or press Alt + =. To use a built-in formula, select Design > Equation. To create your own, select Design > Equation > Ink Equation. Use your finger, stylus, or mouse to write your equation.

Abbreviate equation as Eq. (Eqs. for plural) before a numbered equation unless it is the first word of a sentence. Do not abbreviate other words such as expression, formula, and reaction or capitalize them unless they are the first word of a sentence.

The Equation Editor is a tool you can use to create complex mathematical formulas and insert them in your documents.

On the Insert tab, in the Text group, click Object. In the Object dialog box, click the Create New tab. In the Object type box, click Microsoft Equation 3.0, and then click OK. Use the symbols, templates, or frameworks on the Equation toolbar to edit the equation.

Here's how to select individual characters to recolor them: Click on the equation.Press the right arrow key until the cursor is outside the equation but still inside the placeholder and the equation highlight disappears. Press the left arrow to step past each character until you get to the one you want to recolor.

On the References tab, click Insert Caption from the Captions section of the ribbon. In the Caption pop-up window, select Equation next to Label. This sets both the word and the number as the caption. Optionally, select a Position for the caption and click OK to apply the caption.

To bring up the Equation Editor, On the Insert tab, in the Symbols group, click the arrow next to Equation, and then click Insert New Equation. This will bring up the equation editor toolbar and will place an edit box at the insertion point in the document. Note that the menu at the top of the screen has changed.

If you include tables, figures, and equations in your documents, they should be properly numbered and cross-referenced. By convention, table captions are above the table; figure captions are below the figure, and equation numbers are to the right of the equation.
