Place the city, state, and ZIP Code in that order on the last line. This must be the last line. Never place an ?attention line,? telephone number, or other entries after the ZIP Code line.

If you are writing an address with a zip code in content, style guides often agree on including a comma between the city and state (e.g., Chicago, IL) in the city-state-zip code line. When we are writing zip codes for the U.S. mail, the postal service prefers that punctuation not be used.

The correct format for a numeric ZIP+4 code is five digits, a hyphen, and four digits. The first five digits represent the 5-digit ZIP Code; the sixth and seventh digits (the first two after the hyphen) identify an area known as a sector; the eighth and ninth digits identify a smaller area known as a segment.

Second Two Digits of ZIP Codes Indicate the City The USPS assigns the second two digits in a ZIP Code to denote a city. If a specific geographical region has a central town or city, then the first ZIP Codes are assigned to that city. Once that is done, the ZIP codes get assigned in alphabetical order.

So what do the extra numbers mean? These last 4 digits represent specific delivery routes within delivery areas. This extra detail means an even more precise matching to a more granular level. It could represent a handful of houses on one side of a street, or even a single building that receives a high volume of mail.

ZIP codes are numbered with the first number representing a certain group of U.S. states. The second and third numbers represent a region in that group of states or, in some cases, a large city. The fourth and fifth numbers representing a group of delivery addresses within that region.
