Zoning Improvement Plan (ZIP) codes were implemented in 1963. The five-digit system used the first number to point to a national area, the next two numbers to pinpoint a population centre or large city, and the final two numbers to designate a specific delivery area.

If you have the Zip code in cell A1 you can use the formula =TEXT(A1, "00000") to format the Zip code as 5 digits wide with leading zeros and then merge that instead of the numeric version.
