Many people wonder if amending a Will without a lawyer is possible, and the answer is absolutely! There are three ways to handle major life events that require updates to your Estate Plans: Create a codicil (which is simply changing a Will).

A codicil is like a legal "P.S." to your will. To create a codicil, you write down what you want to remove or add to your existing will, sign it, have two witnesses sign it (as you did with your original will), and then keep it with your will. After your death, your two documents will be read and interpreted together.

For a Codicil to be legally valid, you need to comply with the same formalities as if it were a Will.The reasons for having a Codicil might include removing a gift because you are no longer close to the person or, alternatively, adding a gift for someone you have become close to.

The Codicil cross-refers to the original Will and gives details of the amendments or additions you want to make to it.
