I would discourage using MM/DD/YYYY (e.g. 4/1/2010) format, because this may cause confusion as the rest of the world writes the day before the month. If you really need to write dates in a consise format, I recommend YYYY-MM-DD format.

The only logical format is YYYY/MM/DD because it sorts correctly and provides the info from left to right as you read it. Why are DD/MM/YY and MM/DD/YY both common formats when a date (e.g. 11/6/18) can be so easily misread?

Here's how to sort unsorted dates: Drag down the column to select the dates you want to sort. Click Home tab > arrow under Sort & Filter, and then click Sort Oldest to Newest, or Sort Newest to Oldest.

This was most likely a data entry error. Pivot tables won't allow you to group dates if there are any invalid dates within the data source. Blank cells are also considered to be invalid dates, so you must make sure that there are no blanks.

If the Sort Range option is greyed out it means you haven't selected a range. Check you have a range highlighted as shown above where I've selected cells A1 to B4. Once you click the Advanced sorting range options you'll see a modal window that will help to determine how you would like to sort your data.
